The Williams-Renault FW14 #5, driven by British hero Nigel Mansell, dominated the 1991 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where “Red 5” started from pole, led every lap, set the fastest lap, and took victory by more than 42 seconds. Mansell was at the height of his career, and the FW14 was an exceptionally advanced machine for its time, featuring a 3.5-liter Renault RS3 V10 producing around 750 hp, carbon-fiber composite construction, sophisticated aerodynamics developed by Adrian Newey, and a semi-automatic gearbox. A particularly memorable feature was Mansell’s red No. 5, which became the famous “Red 5” identity; after the race, Ayrton Senna famously accepted a lift back to the pits on Mansell’s Williams after his McLaren ran out of fuel.
