The Ferrari 156 “Sharknose” #18, driven by American star Richie Ginther at the 1961 French Grand Prix at Reims-Gueux, was one of Ferrari’s revolutionary mid-engine Formula 1 machines. Ginther qualified an impressive third, only two seconds behind teammate Phil Hill, but unfortunately retired after 40 of 52 laps with an oil-pressure failure. The 156 was distinguished by its 1.5-liter, 120-degree Dino V6, producing about 190 hp at 9,500 rpm, while the exceptionally light 460-kg chassis gave it an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. Its unmistakable twin “sharknose” front air intakes, low-slung mid-engine layout, and sophisticated aerodynamics helped Ferrari dominate the 1961 season and made the 156 one of the most iconic early rear/mid-engine Grand Prix cars.
