The 1989 Audi 90 quattro #4 Team Audi Sport was a groundbreaking IMSA GTO touring-style race car driven by German endurance-racing star Hans-Joachim Stuck, a former Le Mans winner and one of the era’s most accomplished sports-car drivers. Powered by a turbocharged 2.1-liter five-cylinder engine producing approximately 700 horsepower, the Audi combined extraordinary power with its signature quattro all-wheel-drive system, giving it remarkable traction when accelerating out of corners. Its wide bodywork, flared wheel arches, large rear wing, and striking Audi quattro racing graphics reflected its purpose-built competition design. Unlike many rear-wheel-drive rivals, the Audi could put its power down through all four wheels, making it especially effective on challenging circuits. At the 200 km Sears Point race on September 10, 1989, Stuck drove the #4 to victory, with teammate Hurley Haywood finishing second in the sister Audi. This dominant one-two finish highlighted Audi’s technological advantage and helped establish the quattro as one of the most memorable machines in American sports-car racing.
