The Ford GT40 Roadster X-1 #71, driven by legendary New Zealand racer Chris Amon for the Bruce McLaren team, competed at the 1965 Riverside Grand Prix, where Amon brought the experimental Ford home in 5th place. Amon was already an accomplished international driver and would later win the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The X-1 was unlike virtually any other GT40: it was a one-off open-top roadster built around an exceptionally light aluminum chassis, with the distinctive long-nose bodywork developed for Ford's experimental 427 GT40 program. At Riverside it used a Ford V8 and Hewland transmission, while its open cockpit and lightweight construction made the X-1 a fascinating test bed for aerodynamic, chassis, and drivetrain developments that would influence Ford's later GT40 racing program.
