The 1965 Ford GT40 Roadster X1 #4, driven by New Zealand racing ace Chris Amon for Bruce McLaren’s team during the Nassau Trophy at the Bahamas Speed Week, was one of the most distinctive GT40s ever built. Amon was a highly respected driver who would later become a Le Mans winner, and the X1 was a unique open-top, mid-engine roadster constructed with a lightweight aluminum chassis and originally fitted with Ford’s 289-cubic-inch V8. Unlike the enclosed GT40s, its open cockpit and experimental construction were designed partly to test new ideas from McLaren, Shelby, and Kar Kraft. At Nassau, Amon’s #4 ultimately retired with a gearbox failure, but the one-off X1 became an important development car and later evolved into the GT40 that won the 1966 Sebring 12 Hours.
