The BAR Supertec #23, driven by Finnish racer Mika Salo at the 1999 San Marino Grand Prix, was an important car in British American Racing's debut Formula One season. Salo, an experienced F1 driver, was standing in for the injured Ricardo Zonta and qualified 19th at Imola, eventually being classified 7th after completing 59 of 62 laps, retiring with an electrical problem. The BAR 01 was powered by a 3.0-liter Supertec FB01 V10 and featured a carbon-fiber composite chassis with a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox. Its most distinctive feature was BAR's unusual split Lucky Strike/555 livery, created after the FIA rejected the team's original plan to run completely different liveries on its two cars.
