The 1960 Plymouth Fury represents the spectacular final year of Plymouth’s original “Forward Look” tail-fin era, with styling by the Virgil Exner school of Chrysler design. Its enormous rear fins, circular fin medallions, sweeping fenders, and jet-age details made it one of the most visually distinctive American cars of its time. Beneath the dramatic styling, the Fury introduced unitized (unibody) construction across Plymouth’s full-size range and featured Chrysler’s torsion-bar front suspension, which gave it handling characteristics that period testers found superior to many Ford and Chevrolet competitors. Power ranged from the standard 318-cubic-inch V8 with 230 horsepower to the optional 383-cubic-inch Sonoramic Commando V8 producing 330 horsepower with dual four-barrel carburetors and ram induction. The 1960 Fury also offered unusual features such as swivel front seats and push-button TorqueFlite transmission controls, making it a fascinating blend of extravagant styling and innovative engineering.
