Sauber C9 #62 Le Mans 24H 1987 1:18

loading...

The 1987 Sauber C9 No. 62, entered by Kouros Sauber Mercedes, competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with an impressive driver lineup featuring American racing driver Chip Ganassi, former Formula One driver Johnny Dumfries, and New Zealand's Mike Thackwell. The sleek Group C prototype was powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged Mercedes-Benz V8 producing approximately 620 horsepower, with a lightweight chassis and advanced aerodynamics designed for extreme high-speed performance. Qualifying seventh, the No. 62 demonstrated considerable speed, but its Le Mans challenge ended prematurely after just 37 laps when a gearbox failure forced its retirement. Despite the disappointment, the C9 became an important milestone in Sauber and Mercedes-Benz's endurance racing partnership, which would ultimately reach its greatest success with the legendary 1989 Le Mans victory. Its distinctive black-and-white Kouros livery makes this particular entry a memorable piece of Group C racing history.
