The 1980 Renault 5 Turbo #4, driven by legendary French rally driver Jean Ragnotti with co-driver Jean-Marc Andrié, made a spectacular impression at the Tour de France Automobile. Ragnotti was renowned for his spectacular driving style, car control, and ability to push a rally car to its limits, while Andrié provided the precise pace notes essential to navigating the demanding stages. Unlike the ordinary front-wheel-drive Renault 5, the R5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted, 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels, dramatically widened bodywork, and the striking red-and-yellow Calberson livery. The team won several stages but retired before the finish because of mechanical trouble. This groundbreaking Group 4 machine helped establish the Renault 5 Turbo as one of the most distinctive French rally cars of the 1980s.
