The Porsche 996 GT3 R No. 76 finished 18th overall at the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Michel Cohen-Olivar, Tim Burgess, and Michael Neugarten. Cohen-Olivar was an experienced French endurance racer with extensive GT competition experience, while Burgess and Neugarten were skilled privateer drivers who helped bring consistency and reliability to Porsche’s customer racing program. The 996 GT3 R was a landmark model for Porsche, replacing the air-cooled GT2 racers with the new water-cooled 911 GT3 platform and its naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine derived from Porsche’s racing heritage. Built specifically for GT competition, it featured a lightweight chassis, race-tuned suspension, advanced aerodynamics, and exceptional durability. Its blend of production-based engineering and professional racing technology made it a benchmark for customer GT teams and the foundation for Porsche’s future GT3 success.
