The Porsche 935 No. 40 was the Martini Racing Porsche System entry at the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by German endurance star Rolf Stommelen and Liechtenstein racer Manfred Schurti. Stommelen was an experienced Porsche prototype and sports-car driver who had won Le Mans class honors and numerous major endurance races, while Schurti was a highly accomplished Porsche factory driver who excelled in endurance and touring-car competition. The 935 was based on the 911 Turbo but transformed into a radical Group 5 “silhouette” racer, with flared bodywork, a huge rear wing, and a twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter flat-six producing roughly 590 hp. Remarkably, the No. 40 finished 4th overall and won the Group 5 class, making the 935's Le Mans debut a major success and establishing it as one of Porsche's most successful customer and factory-based racing designs.
