The Porsche 914/6 No. 7 finished an impressive 3rd overall at the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally, driven by Swedish rally legend Björn Waldegård and co-driver Hans Thorszelius. Waldegård was one of the era’s leading rally drivers and would later become the first FIA World Rally Champion in 1979, while Thorszelius was his longtime and highly experienced co-driver. The 914/6 was unique because Porsche replaced the traditional rear-engine 911 with a mid-engine layout, giving the car excellent balance and traction on the snow and ice of Monte Carlo. The rally version used a 2.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, competition suspension, extra lighting, and a reinforced roll cage. Although Porsche had hoped the 914/6 would replace the successful 911 in rallying, Waldegård’s third-place finish proved the car could still challenge the formidable Alpine A110s, making the No. 7 an important and unusual chapter in Porsche rally history.
