The Porsche 914/6 No. 1 won the extraordinary 86-hour Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring in 1970, with Gérard Larrousse, Helmut Marko, and Claude Haldi sharing the driving. Larrousse was a highly successful French endurance and rally driver who would later win the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, while Marko—who later became a major figure in Formula 1—was already an accomplished sports-car racer, and Swiss driver Haldi brought extensive endurance experience. The 914/6 was unusual for Porsche because its mid-engine layout provided excellent balance, while its competition version used a 2.0-liter flat-six producing about 160 hp, a limited-slip differential, larger fuel tanks, upgraded brakes, reinforced suspension, and race lighting. The No. 1 completed 360 laps and approximately 10,184 km, leading a Porsche 1-2-3 finish and demonstrating extraordinary reliability—the car required only one tire change during the grueling race.
