The 1957 Maserati 300S 3.0L Spider #2, driven to victory by legendary Argentine racer Juan Manuel Fangio at the Cuban Grand Prix in Havana, was a remarkable example of Italian sports-car engineering. Fangio, a five-time Formula One World Champion, demonstrated his extraordinary precision and racecraft by winning the 500-kilometer event over Carroll Shelby’s Ferrari 410 Sport. The Maserati featured a 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated inline-six engine producing approximately 245 horsepower, a lightweight open-top body, and a sophisticated chassis with De Dion rear suspension. Unlike the single-seat Grand Prix cars Fangio usually drove, the 300S was built specifically for sports-car competition, combining speed with endurance and handling. Its victory over powerful Ferrari rivals cemented the 300S’s reputation as one of Maserati’s most celebrated racing cars of the 1950s
