The 1979 Volkswagen Golf MkI No. 8, driven by German rally driver Holger Bohne with co-driver Peter Diekmann in the Rallye Hunsrück, showcased Volkswagen’s growing ambitions in competitive rallying. The Golf GTI’s lightweight hatchback body, fuel-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, and nimble front-wheel-drive handling made it a capable challenger to larger rear-wheel-drive rally cars. Prepared to Group 2 competition specifications, the car benefited from performance upgrades and a sporting setup designed for demanding stages. Bohne and Diekmann formed a successful rally partnership, later achieving further success together, including winning the 1981 Tour d’Europe. The Golf’s compact dimensions and responsive handling helped establish the GTI as an important early hot hatch in motorsport.
