The 1989 Mazda 323 4WD No. 7, entered by Mazda Rally Team Europe and driven by Swedish rally star Ingvar Carlsson with co-driver Per Carlsson, made history by winning the 1989 Rally Sweden, the opening round of the World Rally Championship. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine and four-wheel-drive system provided the traction and performance needed to tackle Sweden’s demanding snow- and ice-covered stages. Carlsson completed the rally in 4 hours, 58 minutes, and 15 seconds, finishing just over one minute ahead of the second-place Lancia Delta Integrale. This landmark victory demonstrated that Mazda could compete with established rally powerhouses and cemented the compact 323 4WD’s reputation as a formidable Group A rally car.
