The 1987 Mazda 323 4WD Turbo was a compact performance car that brought rally-inspired engineering to Mazda’s practical 323 hatchback. Combining a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a four-wheel-drive system, it delivered improved traction, lively acceleration, and greater confidence on slippery or uneven roads. Its compact dimensions and relatively lightweight construction made it agile on tight, twisting routes, while the turbocharged powertrain gave it the performance to compete with other emerging rally-bred compact cars. The 323 4WD Turbo stood out as an early example of the high-performance, all-wheel-drive hatchback formula that would become hugely influential in rallying. Its most distinctive feature was its permanent four-wheel-drive system with an approximately 50:50 front-to-rear torque split, paired with a 1.6-liter, 16-valve turbocharged engine producing around 148 horsepower in European road trim. This combination helped establish the Mazda 323 Turbo as a serious contender in the Group A rally era, highlighted by Mazda’s victory in the 1987 Rally Sweden with Timo Salonen and co-driver Seppo Harjanne.
