The Ferrari 512M No. 11 was entered by North American Racing Team (NART) for the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by American star Mark Donohue and British racer David Hobbs. Donohue was one of America’s most versatile and technically gifted drivers, while Hobbs was an accomplished endurance racer with extensive Le Mans experience and a successful career in Formula 1 and sports cars. The 512M was an extensively revised version of Ferrari’s 512S, featuring a lighter and stiffer chassis, improved suspension, and dramatically redesigned aerodynamics, including a longer, cleaner nose and tail for greater stability and reduced drag. Its enormous 5.0-liter V12 produced roughly 610 horsepower, giving it tremendous straight-line speed against the Porsche 917. The NART car’s distinctive blue-and-white livery also set it apart from Ferrari’s traditional red factory cars, making the No. 11 one of the most visually striking Ferrari prototypes of the era.
