The Curtiss P-40N Warhawk “Baby Moe,” served with the 25th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, of the U.S. Army Air Forces’ Fourteenth Air Force in the China-Burma-India theater around 1945. The 51st Fighter Group played an important role in supporting Allied operations in China, protecting supply routes and attacking Japanese troops, airfields, and transportation networks. The P-40N was a late-production version of the famous Warhawk, featuring a lighter airframe than earlier models and powered by an Allison V-12 engine. Its rugged construction made it well suited to the demanding conditions of combat in Asia. “Baby Moe” is especially distinctive for its dramatic shark-mouth nose art and striped rudder, markings associated with the 25th Fighter Squadron’s recognizable Warhawk designs. These personal touches make the aircraft a striking example of the colorful squadron identities and fighting spirit of American airmen in the Pacific during World War II.
