The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray #76, prepared by Greenwood Corvettes for the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans, was driven by American Corvette specialist John Greenwood and renowned French racer Bernard Darniche. Greenwood was famous for transforming Corvettes into brutally fast IMSA and endurance machines, while Darniche was a highly accomplished French driver and multiple-time European rally champion. The C3 Corvette was powered by a massive 7.0-liter Chevrolet ZL1 V8, producing enormous power for its era, and featured Greenwood’s radical wide-body aerodynamic package. Its specially shaped rear fenders and underbody were designed to generate substantial downforce while reducing aerodynamic lift, helping the Corvette reach an astonishing 353 km/h (219 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight—one of the fastest speeds recorded during the event. Unfortunately, the #76 retired after five hours when a puncture damaged the rear suspension and fuel tank, but its combination of American big-block power, extreme aerodynamics, and patriotic “Spirit of Le Mans” livery made it one of the most memorable Corvettes ever to race at Le Mans.
