1959 Nash Metropolitan Checker Taxi 1:18

loading...

The 1959 Nash Metropolitan “Checker Taxi” is a wonderfully unusual combination of two very different pieces of American automotive history: the tiny, British-built Nash Metropolitan and the iconic American Checker taxicab. The Metropolitan was one of America’s earliest successful subcompact cars, measuring dramatically smaller than the huge Detroit sedans of the era and using Austin mechanical components, while the Checker became famous for its rugged, spacious taxi design. The Checker Taxi appearance is a custom treatment rather than a factory-built Nash model, which makes this little car particularly eye-catching. Its miniature proportions, taxi graphics, roof sign, and unmistakable 1950s styling create a playful contrast that sets it apart from virtually every conventional automobile of its time.
